Three roads north

An old travel book on a stone windowsill

Joan drew the maps that we leave in every room. Here is how he chose the routes.

Menorca is small enough to cross in an hour and large enough to lose an afternoon in. The roads that matter are narrow, walled in dry stone on both sides, and almost always empty before eleven.

The first road follows the north coast from Cala Morell to Cavalleria. It is the slowest and the one we recommend for a first day. Stop at the lighthouse, go down to the beach below it and bring a jumper.

The second turns inland at Ferreries and climbs through oak and wild olive. The air changes. There is a farm shop at kilometre nine that sells cheese in the rind and almond cake on Thursdays.

The third is Joan’s own favourite and he will not mark it on the map. Ask him at breakfast.
